Carter Waller ENG 327 Professor McAllister Assignment Two 10/28/2015 Emma and the Theme of Encounters with Strangers Jane Austen’s Emma is a novel dominated by obvious themes like romantic love, gender roles, and family. These themes structure the novel wholly, but deeper down, there are less noticeable themes that are significant in themselves. In Emma, the overlooked theme of characters’ encounters with strangers plays a critical role because of its addition to the reader’s perspectives to multiple aspects of the novel. Encounters with strangers are important because, first, it demonstrates that strangeness, when unsettling the conditions of society’s communication, makes familiarity more attractive to an individual. Second, after evaluating the society’s treatment of strangers in the setting of the town of Highbury, it becomes clear that the theme and novel endorse a conservative, simple society. The instances of encounters with strangers in Emma are used to manipulate the reader in order to convince them that Highbury’s entire society needs new faces or new news to gossip about. Although slavery ended some time ago, African- Americans are still being treated poorly, because some people still believe blacks are inferior. In the cases previously addressed, none of the cases rulings seemed impartial. Although Trayvon Martin wasn’t killed by police officers, the case still inflicted fear into African Americans because in the law if someone is murdered without probable cause, they should go to prison for murder. In this instance, George Zimmerman was found not guilty although he was specifically told not to confront Martin and he shot him although he had no weapons. In the case of Rodney King, although the officers were charged with assault, they were not convicted for it. They were found not-guilty, even though there was a video showing that the police officers had beaten King after they could’ve attained him. In the case of Jonathon Ferrell there was no verdict, although Ferrell had no weapon and was just looking for help. With all this going on, a popular outlet for emotions regarding police brutality was music. A lot of hip hop artists wrote music to release their feelings on this subject.
